DORI-Directed Study on Sucralose and Brain Hunger Pathways Garners Media Attention
A newly published study led by Dr. Kathleen Page, Director of the Diabetes and Obesity Research Institute (DORI), has received widespread media coverage in over 300 outlets worldwide. The study investigates the effects of sucralose—a commonly used non-nutritive sweetener—on brain regions associated with appetite and hunger regulation.
Findings indicate that sucralose consumption activates neural pathways in the hypothalamus that regulate hunger, particularly among individuals with obesity. These results suggest that, contrary to common assumptions, artificial sweeteners may not effectively support weight loss or appetite control, and could instead exacerbate food-seeking behavior.
